Santiago Bernabeu died in Madrid on 2 June 1978. During his presidency he took the club to the very top of international football, as it dominated La Liga and the European Cup, the latter of which he he helped create. Bernabeu had been a player and executive at Real Madrid before becoming its President.
Santiago Bernabeu de Yeste was born in Almansa (Albacete) on 8 June 1895. He became President of Real Madrid in September 1943 and soon started building a new stadium for the team that was eventually opened in 1947. It was later renamed after him.
